  • There are a variety of resources that can be used on test day. This video will show how to use the English dictionary. During testing, this tool can be used during the second part of the performance task, known as the full write portion. The dictionary will look like this once you have followed these next steps.

  • A dictionary window appears in the bottom-left corner of the screen. In its upper-left corner, there is a Merriam-Webster logo next to a text box. To the right of the text box, there is a button labeled [Dictionary] and another labeled [Thesaurus]. Below the text box, there is a larger, blank box with the words "0 ENTRIES FOUND" just above it. There is a third blank text box below the second one.
  • The dictionary window disappears.
[VO NARRATOR]
  • In the upper-right corner of the screen, select the [Dictionary] button by using the mouse or trackpad, depending on the type of device you are using.
[GRAPHICS]
  • The cursor moves to the upper-right corner of the screen, where there are five buttons. From left to right, they are labeled [Dictionary] [Notes], [Line Reader], [Zoom Out], and [Zoom In]. The cursor selects the [Dictionary] button, and the dictionary window appears in the bottom-left corner of the screen.
[VO NARRATOR]
  • As you can see, the English dictionary will then appear in the lower-left corner of the screen. If you don’t like where the dictionary is, you can use your device to drag the notepad to a different part of the screen.

  • The cursor selects the top of the dictionary window and drags it to the center of the screen.
[VO NARRATOR]
  • When you put your cursor in the rectangle at the top of the dictionary screen, you can type the word you would like to know the definition. Select the [Dictionary] button, and you will see the definition of the word you typed. To close the dictionary and continue with your test, select the "X" in the upper-right corner of the dictionary box, or select the [Dictionary] button in the upper-right corner of the screen. Note that different devices may require different actions in order to make these selections. Thanks for watching.

  • The cursor selects the topmost text box in the dictionary window and types "Source," then selects the [Dictionary] button. The definition of Source appears in the second text box below.
  • The cursor highlights the "X" in the upper-right corner of the dictionary window, then moves to the upper-right corner of the screen and selects the [Dictionary] button. The dictionary window closes.
