Second Scoring Requirement for the CAA for ELA
CAASPP email update, December 8, 2021.
Dear LEA CAASPP Coordinator or CAASPP Test Site Coordinator:
In preparation for the 2021–22 California Alternate Assessment (CAA) for English Language Arts/Literacy (ELA) test administration, we would like to inform you that your local educational agency (LEA) or school site has been selected to complete the second scoring requirement. We want to ensure that you have all the necessary resources to prepare and complete second scoring.
What Is Second Scoring?
Second scoring is the process of having another test examiner score the same student's rubric-scored items simultaneously, yet independently, from the student's primary test examiner (TE). The purpose of second scoring is to establish and document standardized scoring procedures and evaluate the validity of the rubric-scored items.
Approximately one to three items in each CAA for ELA will require TEs to score a student's live response during the time of testing using a rubric provided in the Directions for Administration. The second scores will not be used for official scoring or reporting purposes, although an analysis of aggregated second scoring results will be included in the annual technical report for the CAAs. The student's test results are reported whether or not the second scoring occurs.
Who Participates in Second Scoring?
All LEAs and schools assigned to the Form 5 will be required to participate in second scoring for that year. LEAs or schools that were selected for second scoring for the CAA for ELA in the previous year will not be selected to participate in second scoring the following year.
How Does Second Scoring Work?
Participating schools must have a primary TE and secondary TE present at the time of testing to observe the student's live response to rubric-scored items. All scores must be entered into the Data Entry Interface before the end of the test administration window. The online test administration manual will have a step-by-step procedure on the second scoring process.
What Are the Responsibilities of Coordinators and Test Examiners for Second Scoring?
The lists of responsibilities and deadlines related to second scoring are included in the checklists on the Manuals and Instructions web page on the CAASPP website .

A second scoring quick reference guide and video are available on the CAA Test Administration web page.
